  • Orrin Woodward, Recipient of the National Benchmarking Award at Age 25
February 06, 2013 - Orrin Woodward, Recipient of the National Benchmarking Award at Age 25

Orrin Woodward is an entrepreneur that has succeeded in a number of arenas throughout his life. Prior to co-authoring his bestselling book Launching a Leadership Revolution and becoming one of the most sought after leadership development speakers across the globe, Orrin Woodward started his career as an engineer for GM and climbed up the ranks rapidly.

At the age of 25, Orrin became the youngest winner of a prestigious engineering award “The National Benchmarking Award.” The International Benchmarking Clearinghouse presented Orrin with this award in recognition of his astounding benchmarking research on automotive fuel pumps. The two-year study that Orrin conducted gave the industry a better understanding of the technology, trends, and correlations of various competitors’ fuel pumps, which allowed vast improvements for the future production of AC Delco Systems’ fuel pump. This research resulted in massive enhancements that saved the company a great deal of money during the production stage, significantly improved durability and efficiency, and reduced the vibration level to limit unwanted noise for the driver.

This award recognizes excellence and is not handed out lightly. Orrin is adept at taking something that is good and making it great. This is one reason why Orrin Woodward has four patents (three in production at one time) to his name. This feat is mind boggling, as many engineers will go their entire career without developing even one patent, but Orrin put his mind to work at the young age of 25 and cranked out four patents in a relatively short amount of time.

The success that Orrin achieved grabbed the attention of a number of people across the nation, sending them on a race to recruit him for the knowledge that he could lend to their firms. He accepted an offer and became a successful consultant, developing further benchmarking studies. Orrin retired after a few years of consulting, developed a large number of successful businesses across the country, and is now excited about the impact that his leadership books are having with readers all over the world. View a PDF file of the 1994 Engineering Update article about Orrin’s award here or read the text of the article below.

    COVER STORY

    AC Delco Systems

    Benchmarking’s

Benchmarking has been defined as the search for, and implementation of, best practices. Benchmarking supports the evolution of an organization that continuously improves. Benchmarking is also a Quality Network Action Strategy and a key AC Delco Systems initiative.

AC Delco Systems won a national award for its work on benchmarking automotive fuel pumps (detailed in June 1992 issue of Engineering Update). A paper describing AC Delco Systems’ benchmarking success story was recognized as an outstanding example of both the process and potential of benchmarking. The authors, Orrin Woodward and John Predmore, presented their work on Technical Competitive Analysis (TCA) at a benchmarking conference in June 1994.

AC Delco Systems’ two year study of competitors’ fuel pumps pinpointed major differences among the motors of the various pumps, and revealed some interesting trends and correlations. “Best-in-class” test results were summarized as targets for all future pump designs. Engineers were able to implement this new-found knowledge and incorporate several major improvements in both current and future generation fuel pumps. These improvements resulted from a better understanding of motor technology, not direct copying. The new generation AC Delco Systems fuel pump will leapfrog the best of the current competition in several key product attributes.

Some of the improvements that resulted from this project were: durability of motor brushes was doubled, motor efficiency was doubled, and vibration (which contributes to noise) was reduced by a factor of five.

The non-profit agency sponsoring the Benchmarking Awards, the American Productivity & Quality Center, works with business, labor, government, health care and academia to improve productivity, quality, and quality of work life. The Center’s International Benchmarking Clearinghouse, which began operation in 1992, provides a number of products and services to assist organizations with their benchmarking efforts.

The purpose of the Benchmarking Awards is to provide criteria for self-assessment, recognize teams and organizations that provide models of excellence, and extend the state-of-the-art by encouraging and communicating new techniques and the results of on-going research.

Criteria for the Benchmarking Awards include overall benchmarking approach, implementation of findings and documented savings. In 1993, the inaugural year of the Benchmarking Awards, there were seven finalists but no awards were given (a reflection of the high standards set by the judging committee). This year, AC Delco Systems was one of the seven organizations nationwide receiving an award. Other functions benchmarked include: maintenance, customer satisfaction measurement, coolant recovery, and education planning.

For more information about competitive product benchmarking or the Technical Competitive Analysis Quality Council, contact John Predmore at 8-387-8553. Training and support materials for product teams and TCA champions include a videotaped summary of the fuel pump analysis.

  • LIFE Highlights for 2012
    December 21, 2012 - LIFE Highlights for 2012

As we near the end of the year, we would like to take a little time to recap some of the remarkable things that have happened in the LIFE business since its inception in November of 2011 and to offer our sincere and deepest gratitude to all of our LIFE Members and Customers. It has been a year of record-breaking sales, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the growth and development that we have already seen take place in the LIFE Community. Many connections have been made, and life-long bonds have been established. It is so gratifying to witness the positive transformation engendered by the life-changing information we offer in every area of life—in all of the 8F categories: Faith, Family, Friends, Finances, Fitness, Fun, Following, and Freedom. We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our Members as well as of the various products that we have added to our repertoire.

This past year, we have released several new informative and inspiring books to guide and motivate our Members and Customers on their success journeys. These include Tim Marks’ very first book Voyage of a Viking. The book details his own personal growth story of overcoming obstacles and weaknesses and sanding off the sharp edges of his personality in order to improve his marriage and family life as well as his finances and to become a leader in this industry who encourages others to believe in themselves, do the hard work to learn and grow, and really go for their dreams. Tim’s glowing example is definitely one worthy of emulation.

Bestselling author Chris Brady also released his newest creation A Month of Italy: Rediscovering the Art of Vacation this year. Chris’s wit and humor shine in this story of his family’s adventures on a month-long vacation in fascinating, charming Italy. A Month of Italy is not only entertaining, but it also offers plenty of advice for greater success in leadership and in life. Brady shows readers first-hand how to leverage Strategic Sabbaticals for increased rejuvenation, clarity of thought, production, achievement, and overall well-being.

We also published bestselling author Oliver DeMille’s newest book 1913. This book offers invaluable incite into three events that occurred in 1913 and one follow-up event that occurred in 1936 that constituted a Turning Point away from freedom in the U.S. But far from a doom-and-gloom book, it also pinpoints the type of people and the actions necessary to reverse this trend, create a new Turning Point toward freedom, and restore America to her former glory.

RESOLVED: 13 Resolutions for LIFE, bestselling author Orrin Woodward’s first solo project, was honored to make the Top 100 All-Time Best Leadership Books List. The book also became the foundational component of LIFE’s Mental Fitness Challenge, which was released this year. The Mental Fitness Challenge is a 13-week course, based on the principles and resolutions taught in the RESOLVED book, that focuses on personal and leadership development in every aspect of life. Both the RESOLVED book and the MFC have been so successful in producing measurable growth among readers and participants that schools and businesses across North America have begun to use the materials as part of their own leadership development curricula. As the perfect complement to these products and achievements, Orrin Woodward also released in 2012 his RESOLVED Primer, a compact, highly accessible companion volume to RESOLVED: 13 Resolutions for LIFE designed by New York Times bestselling author (and Networking Times senior editor) John David Mann to be a quick, easy, and powerful read.

And since we know that youth are the future of this world, LIFE launched the exciting Edge Series in 2012. The best way to learn is from the experience of others, so we wanted to offer young people the advantage of expediting the process of learning leadership principles, thereby giving them the potential to achieve their goals much earlier than most and without having to learn every lesson the hard way. Who wouldn’t want an edge like that?

In addition to offering the advantage of access to life-changing information, we love to reward our Members for their hard work, dedication, and accomplishments. One spectacular bonus our Members can receive is the One-Time Cash Awards for ranks of Leader 6 and above. Who wouldn’t be thrilled to get a little extra cash to celebrate their achievements? And, honestly, these bonuses aren’t so little!

Another fabulous benefit that we offer our LIFE Members is the opportunity to earn a Leader 6 or a 6,000 for 6 FREE Incentive Trip. Rewards don’t get much more thrilling and fun than this! Members have the ability to earn these amazing free trips within a fairly short time of enrollment, and those who qualify get to choose from several breath-taking destinations.

See? We told you it’s been an exciting year! And we don’t plan on stopping now. We fully intend to keep marching toward our goal of reaching one million people and beyond because people and relationships are the heart and soul of the LIFE business. We are deeply appreciative of all of the LIFE Members and Customers who have already ventured out with us—and all of those we know will be joining the journey soon! We look forward to so many more wonderful developments within the LIFE Community, and we are determined to keep working to supply our Members and Customers with true value so that we can help you Live the Life You’ve Always Wanted!

  • The MFC Is Now a College Course at CLU!
July 19, 2012 - The MFC Is Now a College Course at CLU!

The greatest, most valuable contributions to the world tend to come from those who seek first to improve themselves. The Mental Fitness Challenge (MFC) is an effective tool for engendering such change, and it can now be taken for college credit through Christian Leadership University (CLU) (www.cluonline.com). CLU is an online Christian college/theological seminary that focuses on helping students to “learn to clearly and consistently hear the voice of God.” The university is accredited by Christian Accreditation International (CAI) and certified by the “Association of Christian Educators and Administrators” (ACEA) (not by the government) and offers Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in Biblical Studies, Christian Arts, Christian Counseling, Christian Entrepreneurship, and Christian Leadership, as well as several other major fields of study.

Because of the workload involved, the MFC course offered through CLU LEA401 is a 13-week senior or graduate-level (with extra reading) class (go to http://www.cluonline.com/section4.htm#lea401 for a course description), but the course does not have any prerequisites and, therefore, is open to all existing students and new enrollees alike, whether seeking a degree or not. Courses at the university are offered through a distance learning program, so the MFC class is accessible online and conveniently available to all students no matter where they may reside. A member of the faculty/staff at CLU will serve as the student’s Accountability Partner throughout the course to ensure that all components are satisfactorily completed and that every student receives the most benefit possible from the MFC. In addition, the four credits earned for the course can be applied toward the attainment of a degree from CLU. Tuition for the course is $320 plus the cost of the MFC materials, but as a special incentive, CLU is currently offering a $200 discount off the cost of tuition. (For first-time students, there will also be a $25 application fee.)

Enroll at www.cluonline.com/apply, and order this course by copying the following statement into the note box at the bottom of the New Student Enrollment form:

“I am ordering the course syllabus for ‘LEA401 – The Mental Fitness Challenge’ and authorizing $120 payment plus S&H fees.”

LIFE Members can, of course, purchase the MFC materials from themselves and receive PV credit as usual. And those who refer three other people to take the course will be reimbursed for the cost of their MFC materials through the LIFE “3 for Free” Program. All those who are eager to make an impact on the world by first cultivating growth and improvement in themselves go to www.cluonline.com/apply to sign up today and start Living the LIFE You’ve Always Wanted!

  • A Month of Italy by Chris Brady Now Available!
June 29, 2012 - A Month of Italy by Chris Brady Now Available!

Have you ever felt overworked, overstressed, maxed out, and out of focus?

Have you ever needed a break from it all, meaning something more than a frenzied weekend or busy plastic vacation?

Have you ever had enough of your cell phone, emails, social networks, texts, and the like?

Have you ever felt like you were out of balance and needed some serious restoration?

Have you ever considered the fact that you could take a career break—a sabbatical—to allow you to clear your head and restore your focus?

Have you ever dreamed of traveling through the back roads of Italy and seeing the famous Tuscan countryside?

Have you ever wanted to sample Italy's cuisine, sunsets, culture, art, architecture, and history?

Are you entertained by humorous narrative and adventure stories?

Anyone who can answer "yes" to even one of these questions will be happy to learn of the release of NY Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal best-selling author Chris Brady's latest book A Month of Italy: Rediscovering the Art of Vacation this July. For just a little taste, here is the dust jacket inscription:

“What can possibly be said about Italy that hasn't been already? Primarily, that you can enjoy it, too! Refreshingly relatable in a genre previously populated by wealthy expats and Hollywood stars, this book chronicles an ordinary family taking an extraordinary trip, and most importantly, paves the way for you to take one of your own! With hilarious wit and fast-paced narrative, Brady thrills with honest commentary on what a ‘trip of a lifetime’ actually feels like, and most endearingly, he succeeds in convincing you that not only should you take a similar one, but that you will! Within a few pages, you'll be visualizing panoramic Tuscan vistas and breaking open the piggy bank, laughing as you turn the pages and dreaming of your own escape. This story is one of going slow in order to go fast; it’s about rediscovering and bringing back into favor a lost art, namely, the art of vacation, and it is—or rather should be—a story about you.”

In his uniquely humorous fashion, Brady relates the importance of strategic breaks and even sometimes "radical sabbaticals" to sharpen one's saw and maintain peak performance, optimum health, and overall well-being. The dominant message of the book is: "Sometimes you have to go slow in order to go fast!"

Brady's book certainly couldn't come out at a better time. Americans are working more and more hours and taking fewer and fewer vacations, leading to stress, burnout, and health challenges. Among the list of developed countries, the U.S. now ranks near the bottom when it comes to the average number of paid vacation days taken per year, with a staggeringly low average of just thirteen days (compared to forty-two for Italy, thirty-seven for France, and thirty-five for Germany). Even worse than the small number of breaks Americans take in a year is what they do with their time during those breaks. One survey stated that 88 percent of Americans carry electronic devices while on vacation to communicate with work! That's 88 percent! Given the fact that the idea of taking a vacation is nothing new and almost everyone seems to agree that at least some downtime is critical for maintaining peak performance and happiness, these trends in the opposite direction are shocking.

Brady relates his own personal story in the book, where he explains that he had lost his passion for excellence, was finding himself snapping at people, and was becoming annoyed at situations that would normally not even bother him. Then he realized that he had gotten away from his own well-proven formula for what he calls "strategic sabbaticals": intentionally scheduled breaks of various durations taken with the express purpose of keeping himself sharp and fully engaged in life. "People used to ask me all the time how I stayed so enthusiastic and motivated," Brady states. "Suddenly, I realized they weren't asking me that anymore!"

    The solution?

A "radical sabbatical." Brady packed up his family of six and headed to the dreamy land of Italy, sticking mostly to the back roads and blending as deeply and smoothly as possible into the local cultures. What followed was a love and adventure story filled with hilarity, architecture, history, art, family, and success fundamentals.

    And the result?

Within one year of Brady's sabbatical, he relocated his family home to another state as he had long dreamt of doing, founded a multimillion dollar company with several of his best friends, and wrote a best-selling book—not bad for the clarity provided by just one four-week break!

"Most people don't think of vacation as an art form," says Brady, "but it is. Too many people aren't taking sufficient breaks, or the right kind of breaks. A proper vacation should be more than rest—it should bring restoration. Living a fulfilling life that matters only happens with specific intent. And learning how to stay sharp and 'in the zone' is a very important, in fact strategic, part of that." Brady's book does an excellent job of communicating these important life truths, largely because of its wildly entertaining narrative style. Brady doesn't pontificate with a bunch of "dos and don'ts," but instead demonstrates the art of vacation through his own adventures.

Critics are already raving about the book.  Here are some of the early reviews:

“I was intrigued from the first sentence clear through the book! It teaches so many life and leadership lessons—about family, relationships, learning, improving, and becoming better. I’ll read it again and again, and I’ll read it on the plane on every vacation I ever go on.” – Oliver DeMille, NY Times Best-Selling Author of A Thomas Jefferson Education, Freedom Shift, and 1913

"A beautiful story and pivotal idea for a book!" – Richard Bliss Brooke, Author of Mach II, The Art of Vision and Self Motivation, and The Four Year Career

"With humor, Brady shares the unbounded pleasure of vacationing with your family in a land of heart-warming history, incredible beauty, the most gracious people, and of course, the world's most delicious food and wine! After reading his entertaining work, you will be charting your own course to Italy."  – Sharon Lechter, Co-Author of Outwitting the Devil, Three Feet from Gold, and Rich Dad Poor Dad

“Extremely engaging and delightful—a well told story!” – Chris Gross, CEO of Gabriel Media Group, Inc. and Co-Founder of Networking Times

“This is a book every traveler should read and bring along in order to experience the best of Italy.” – Dr. Gaetano (Guy) Sottile, President and Founder of Italy for Christ, Inc.

“Witty, funny, and at points downright hilarious, but mixed with profound truths shared in a way that makes one pause and ponder.” – Orrin Woodward, Winner of the 2011 IAB Top Leadership Award

“A spellbinding lesson in learning how to live again, with real purpose. You can’t stop turning the pages . . .” – Art Jonak, Founder of MastermindEvent.com

“I have never read a book that teaches so much while being this fun at the same time.” – Tim Marks, Best-Selling Author of Voyage of a Viking

“This is the best work Chris Brady has written to date. If this is a vacation handbook, it has redefined the vacation experience.” – Venkat Varada, Silicon Valley Executive

“Vacationing truly is a lost art, and Brady poignantly and beautifully illustrates why it is so vital for driven leaders. A timeless treatise on ‘sharpening the saw,’ A Month of Italy is a book I will sip and savor, ponder and reflect on time and time again. Not only are Chris’s insights powerful and refreshing, but his vivid and witty writing is simply a pleasure to read. Reading this book is a charming vacation itself, and it will inspire you to vacation deliberately, effectively, and joyfully.” – Stephen Palmer, New York Times Best-Selling Author of Uncommon Sense: A Common Citizen’s Guide to Rebuilding America

“In our hectic lives, we are rarely 100 percent present in any situation. Chris Brady shows that with proper play time, our work time is so much more effective. He has freed my spirit!” – Jason Ashley, Country Singer/Songwriter (Texas Songwriter of the Year 2008)

“Italy is unique. Moreover, it is a country where the traveler can enjoy the most various experiences. Chris Brady’s book has the ability, astonishing even for an Italian, to convey to the reader that variety, that richness of feelings, sights, perfumes, tastes . . . and people.” – Senator Lucio Malan, Senior Secretary of the Presidency of the Italian Senate

Whether readers are looking for an entertaining summer beach read or a manual for living a better life, A Month of Italy will surely fit the bill. A Month of Italy can be found wherever books are sold, and the author invites readers to join the community of others who are Rediscovering the Art of Vacation at www.amonthofitaly.com.

  • The Mental Fitness Challenge is Here!
April 27, 2012 - The Mental Fitness Challenge is Here!

    The Mental Fitness Challenge

The Mental Fitness Challenge (MFC) is here, and it is an adventure like no other. Developed by seven of the country’s top leadership gurus, nationally acclaimed speakers, and personal transformation experts, with NY Times and Wall Street Journal best-selling authors Orrin Woodward and Chris Brady leading the way (visit their highly acclaimed blogs here: (http://orrinwoodwardblog.com and www.chrisbrady.com ), this program will awaken your mind and change your life. The MFC is a rare, comprehensive personal development program that provides you with the opportunity to “Live the Life You’ve Always Wanted.

Consisting of a variety of new materials combined with updates of materials that have proven timeless and effective year after year, the MFC format is presented as three modules – one for each month – that are packaged in stylish, protective casing. The MFC is strategically and effectively designed to exercise your mind and teach you success thinking in the thirteen aspects of life covered in Orrin Woodward’s book RESOLVED: 13 Resolutions for LIFE. For 90 days, a mere three months of your life, you have the chance to make an investment in yourself that offers a lifetime of returns.

Participating in a challenge or boot camp is usually done with the goal of losing weight, toning one’s body, and/or building muscle. In the bigger picture, it’s about feeling good and gaining a sense of accomplishment. These programs are great, and we highly recommend them to anyone; however, the one failing component of these programs is that they are temporary. Once the typical challenge or boot camp ends, you’re on your own—an invisible but powerful sensation. For some, the challenge may be the spark that leads to a life changed forever. However, for the vast majority, it was an undertaking that required all the motivation they could muster just to make it through, so continuing to follow the program is highly unlikely.

We invite you to take a 90-Day Challenge that never ends. Sure, the Challenge itself will only take 90 days to complete, but unlike a new diet or exercise boot camp, the transformation achieved is permanent. The Mental Fitness Challenge (MFC) will certainly require work, dedication, and persistence. We do not promise instant results or miracles of any kind. But we do promise that if you faithfully follow the program, your thought process will be renewed.

This program is a journey for the heart and an awakening for the mind. Shortly after beginning the MFC, you will start to see yourself in a new light and will approach life differently. The founders of the MFC have mentored thousands of men, women, entrepreneurs and couples and have witnessed the amazing potency of these materials.

Consider this: What did your life look like 90 days ago? One hundred eighty days ago? A year ago? Notwithstanding life changes involving loved ones, jobs, or homes, how does your life look today compared to then? Now, ask yourself this: How COULD your life look 90 days from now? Imagine the possibilities, and then take the Challenge and find out! For every failing marriage, frustrated parent, hopeless addict, bankrupt home, or faith-starved man or woman, the MFC has the capacity to teach, motivate, and assist one with implementing the necessary changes in the right areas of life, the impact of which will last a lifetime.

  • Oliver DeMille Reviews Voyage of a Viking by Tim Marks
April 23, 2012 - Oliver DeMille Reviews Voyage of a Viking by Tim Marks

Years ago I gave a speech at a business convention. I’ve done a lot of these, so I don’t remember every detail or venue, but several really stand out as memorable. On this occasion, the big arena had many thousands of people, but due to construction there was only one way to the stage, and we had to get there early and sit on the wing of the temporary stadium stage with all the speakers for that session. A construction boss walked us all through together to ensure that we were safe and avoided the danger areas.

This turned out to be a real blessing to me because the speaker who shared the session with me changed my life. He spoke just after me, and because of the special construction circumstances, I had to stay after I spoke and listen to what he had to say. I think if I had been scheduled after him, I would have been busy thinking about my own speech and not listened closely to his message. Thankfully, I was highly motivated after my speech, and I listened carefully to every word he said.

He started by saying that nearly all his important lessons in life had come from his struggles, failures, mistakes, or losses. He was a fan of golf and talked about how every golf mistake he made taught him how to be a better golfer. He related this to life and business losses and discussed at length how he was taught in school to avoid mistakes and focus on the lessons of success—but how real life had taught him exactly the opposite.

It was a moving speech. He had us all pencil out our five biggest losses and mistakes in life and then helped us brainstorm at least three major lessons we should have learned from each. That’s fifteen top lessons, and he assured us that these lessons were some of the things we most need to achieve our goals in life. I was mesmerized, instructed, and moved. The speaker was right: my fifteen lessons have been invaluable to me.

I went away deeply touched by this speech. I have seldom listened to a speech or read a book that was so genuine, so real, so deep, and so powerful—until today.

Today I read a book that struck me the same way this speech did. Voyage of a Viking by Tim Marks is a must read for anyone who cares about success and leadership. It will apply to moms, dads, mentors, professionals, executives, entrepreneurs, and everyone else. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. I read the book straight through from the beginning to the end.

I was touched, moved, motivated, and instructed. I cried. I read quotes to my wife and later to two of my kids. I found myself taking notes about my own life and making plans to be better. This book is incredibly real, genuine, and powerful.

Marks admits that not everything in Viking history should be emulated, but he emphasizes how much we can learn from the positive Viking traits, including such things as yearning for freedom, being courageous explorers, and connecting communities. He teaches how the name for the modern Bluetooth comes from the Viking king “Bluetooth” Gormsson of AD 958, a great builder of bridges (literally and figuratively) between communities. This concept of bridge-building is still much needed in all facets of modern leadership.

Marks shows how another Viking trait worthy of emulation is bullheadedness, which combines initiative and innovation with tenacity and ingenuity. Together these form the base of the great entrepreneurial values—they are also the de facto values of the great free societies in history.

One of the most moving things in this book is Marks’ view of what it means to be an adult, a leader, and a man. In many ways, this reminds me of one of my favorite authors—Louis L’Amour. Some prestigious universities were criticized a few years back when they began using L’Amour texts in great literature courses, but this didn’t surprise me. Some of his works are, in fact, truly great.

As a youth, one of my favorite pastimes was reading L’Amour. My dad was a school teacher by trade, and my mom was an English teacher for both high school and college. But our family ran a farm with croplands as well as cattle, sheep, horses, and other animals, and a lot of my non-school time was spent working with my dad and brothers on the farm.

In later years, after I became an author, my brothers made it a standing joke to laugh about how often they’d be in the middle of a farm project (hauling hay, moving wheat into bins, building fences, shearing sheep, exercising the horses, etc.) only to notice that somehow I’d slipped away from the work and was nowhere to be found—I was nearly always high on a haystack in one of the barns reading books by L’Amour or some other author. Marks’ Voyage of a Viking book would have fit right in.

This is a book about life, what it means to live a good one, and how all of us have to overcome our challenges if we want to make a positive difference in the world. In my book The Student Whisperer, which I wrote with Tiffany Earl, I wrote about the “desert” or “wilderness” that all leaders must pass through on the path to any success, but I have never seen it more effectively described than in Voyage of a Viking. This alone is worth the price of the book.

But there is so much more. Marks’ thesis sums up what this book, and in fact all success in life, is all about: “Define what you want, learn from someone who has gone before you, and then do it for the glory of God.” Right on. It is full of profound gems. For example: “Being humble doesn’t mean you think less of yourself—it means you think of yourself less” and “We can judge how good we are as students by how fast we implement our mentor’s advice.”

Perhaps the most powerful thing about this excellent book, as I mentioned earlier, is that it is one of those rare contributions to success literature that shows how our losses, struggles, setbacks, mistakes, and challenges are some of our most important teachers and mentors. A lot of books tell us to make lemonade out of lemons or see the silver lining in things, but this book shows us how this works—in real life, in the face of real obstacles, in our own experiences. As such, it is literally a must read.

Leadership is about wisdom, and Voyage of a Viking is a profoundly wise book. There are a few wisdom books every leader simply must read, like Corrie Ten Boom’s Tramp for the Lord, Goldratt’s Theory of Constraints, or L’Amour’s The Last of the Breed. And, of course, there are a few truly wise business books, such as The Radical Leap by Steve Farber, Good to Great by Jim Collins, Organizing Genius by Warren Bennis, and Johnson’s and Blanchard’s Who Moved My Cheese?, among others. And who can forget Goleman’s Primal Leadership or The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey? Tim Marks’ Voyage of a Viking fits right in to this list.

As Marks himself says about this book: “This is a no-holds-barred discussion on the speed of the leader determining the speed of the group.” This book is fun. It is about finding yourself as a leader by dedicating your life to serving others, and it is about the adage, as articulated in the foreword by Orrin Woodward, that example in leadership isn’t the main thing; it’s everything.

I’m still applying those fifteen lessons I penciled out years ago as I listened just off stage, and I know that many years in the future, I’ll still be re-reading and applying the things I learned today in Voyage of a Viking. It’s a truly great book. So do yourself a favor and don’t miss out on this great contribution to leadership!

Oliver DeMille is the author of A Thomas Jefferson Education, Leadership Education, The Student Whisperer, The Coming Aristocracy, FreedomShift, and other books on freedom and leadership.

  • Voyage of a Viking by Tim Marks
April 05, 2012 - Voyage of a Viking by Tim Marks

The world today is filled with people who are enslaved by debt and riddled with fear that their situations will never improve because of the failing economy. More marriages seem to fail these days than the ones that last. Children all over are growing up in broken homes with absentee parents, wondering who will love them and take the time to play with them and be involved in their lives. The tragedies and struggles that we humans face can sometimes seem overwhelming and diminish our confidence so far that we feel unloved and doubt whether we are smart enough, talented enough, or good enough to be successful and enjoy peace and happiness in our lives. Many harden their hearts and try to shut down their emotions to avoid the pain, or they turn to drugs and alcohol to try to find some kind of relief. But these kinds of self-preservation methods do not bring peace, joy, or freedom. The pain is only compounded as relationships, finances, health, and self-respect suffer from the addictions and the lack of heart-felt emotion.

How does one overcome and get to a place of joy, hope, and success? Tim Marks, nationally acclaimed speaker, activist, mentor, and co-founder of LIFE, knows. In his new book Voyage of a Viking, Marks details his dramatic personal achievement in the face of adversity with a little dose of humor. He candidly shares his personal tragedies and triumphs in the hope that others can learn from his mistakes and gain wisdom from the lessons he has learned in life as he has worked to sand off the rough edges of his Viking personality in order to become a man of grace. Laugh with him, cry with him, and get inspired by his personal success to reach for your own dreams and goals.

You can live the life you have always wanted! Let Tim Marks help you start the journey with Voyage of a Viking. He started out as a poor, dyslexic child from a broken family who was failing in school and engrossed in habits such as drinking and smoking in order to avoid the pain and fit in with the cool kids. Now he is a happily married man of faith and a dedicated father of four with a highly successful leadership business that has helped thousands of families rekindle the dreams, hope, and joy in their lives. Now that is a success story worthy of emulation!
